Invisalign FAQs

- What are Invisalign clear aligners?
Without using any metal wires or brackets, the Invisalign clear aligner system can straighten your teeth with a series of custom-fitted aligners.
The consultation process uses advanced 3D computer imaging technology to develop a treatment plan customized to your unique needs.
We will then create a series of clear aligners that will fit your teeth precisely during each of the Invisalign treatment stages.
- How does the Invisalign process work?
The Invisalign process uses a series of clear plastic aligners that are created to move your teeth by tiny increments throughout the treatment process. Each aligner is meant to be worn for approximately two weeks before being replaced with the next one in the series.
This progression continues until your teeth are in their corrected positions. The length of your Invisalign treatment will be determined by your dentist based on your specific needs.
- How long will my Invisalign treatment take?
Your treatment length will be based on your unique requirements and will be determined by your dentist.
Considerations in the duration of treatment include the degree of misalignment of your teeth or jaw, the shape of your bite, and exactly how much movement will be necessary to correct the problem.
- What are Invisalign aligners made from?
The Invisalign aligners are made with USP Class VI medical-grade, high molecular weight, polyurethane resins. They are BPA free.
- How often will I need to visit the dentist?
Your dentist will schedule brief appointments with you to review your progress every 4 - 6 weeks. Invisalign aligners do not require any adjustments or tightening as you simply switch to a new set of aligners every two weeks.
Your dentist will monitor your progress and general oral health during these appointments as well as make any adjustments to your treatment if necessary and answer any questions you may have.
- What are the primary features of Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners:
- Offer a more discreet solution than traditional braces
- Have a smooth construction for enhanced comfort
- Require no adjustment appointments
- Are removable for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing
- How much does Invisalign cost?
The severity of your needs, and therefore the length of your treatment, will determine the cost. The more severe the malocclusion, the more aligners you will require, and the more your treatment will cost.
Most often, the cost of Invisalign will be similar to that of traditional orthodontic treatment (braces).
- Will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
You will likely find that Invisalign is a very comfortable fit in your day-to-day life.
There are no dietary restrictions with Invisalign as you can take them out to eat, drink, brush, and floss. This means you do not have to give up any of the foods you love, and taking care of your teeth is just as simple as ever.
- Are there any food or drink restrictions?
No! Invisalign clear aligners are intended to be quickly and easily removed, so you can take them out before eating or drinking. As a result, there are no dietary restrictions and you can continue to eat all the foods you enjoy.
It is important to note that clear aligners can become stained. To avoid this, we recommend removing your Invisalign aligners before consuming beverages such as wine, coffee, or dark soda beverages.
- How many sets of aligners will I need?
This will be based on the severity of your misalignment and will be determined by your dentist.
Only after careful examination of your bite during the initial consultation will your dentist be able to provide an accurate estimate of how long your treatment will take.
- Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Potential candidates for Invisalign only need to have healthy teeth and gums.
Options that provide a subtle way to correct teeth, such as Invisalign, are making orthodontic treatment for adults more and more common.
- Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Absolutely! Not only are teenagers potential candidates for Invisalign, but there is a line created specifically for their unique needs.
To help teens stay on track with their treatment, Invisalign Teen aligners have compliance indicators on them (small blue dots) that will fade after the aligners have been worn for two full weeks.
They also feature eruption tabs which provide space for second molars and prevent them from growing in crooked.
- How often will I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
Your dentist will outline the exact length of time each aligner is meant to be worn for, but on average most patients switch to the next set of aligners every two weeks or so.
- How can I clean my aligners?
You should always rinse your aligners each time they are removed to wash away dry saliva and plaque. Otherwise, it could result in dental decay and bad breath.
Using denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, or the official Invisalign cleaning crystals, soak your aligners daily.
Before replacing your aligners, remember to brush and floss your teeth. It is essential to maintain good oral hygiene to prevent cavities and decay. Proper brushing and flossing prevent food debris and bacteria from becoming trapped between your teeth and aligner, reducing the risk of dental problems.
Using an anti-bacterial soft soap, you can gently clean your aligners. Avoid harsh scrubbing to prevent scratching them. This is an inexpensive and effective way to keep your aligners clear, clean, and free from harmful bacteria.
- Can I use Invisalign if I play sports?
Invisalign clear aligners are easily removable so you can enjoy any sporting activity without worry of causing damage to your aligners.
Keep in mind that Invisalign must be worn for a minimum of 22 hours per day to be effective, so plan your time carefully.
We also recommend investing in a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth during activities. Orthodontic treatments can cause your teeth to loosen slightly as they shift into their new positions, making them susceptible to damage.
- Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Yes! When needed, simply remove your aligners to play your instrument and then replace them when you are done. Be sure to store them carefully when they are out of your mouth.
- How should I store my aligners?
You should use the case that your Invisalign aligners came in to protect them whenever you need to take them out.
