At Hunter Dental in Markham, our dentists provide dental sedation options, including IV, to try and help calm our anxious patients or to make long dental procedures more comfortable.
Types of Sedation
Our dentists have various techniques to help relax and calm nervous patients. We also offer several sedation options.
Your dentist can help determine if dental sedation is right for you and will recommend an option for your procedure.
At Hunter Dental, we offer three sedation options for our patients:
- Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is inhaled through a mask placed over the mouth and nose. The medication should provide relaxation to patients while allowing them to remain awake and able to communicate. Nitrous oxide tends to reduce anxiety, increase pain threshold, lessen a gag reflex, and create an illusion of time passing more quickly.
- Oral Sedation
Your dentist may prescribe oral sedatives to be taken before your procedure. This medication is in the form of a pill or liquid and should calm a patient while remaining awake for the procedure.
- Intravenous (IV) Sedation
Administered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedatives normally provide the deepest level of sedation without using general anesthesia.
